Speculation Press is an independent, royalty-paying, small press book publishing house. Our Mission To publish the best of new, interesting and imaginative science fiction and fantasy. Our Books The majority of our books are cross-genre, combining elements of science fiction, fantasy, mystery, and paranormal. Many of our books also have a bit of romance. Within the context of multi-faceted plots, our characters are well developed and interesting. While saving the world, or universe, our characters face issues and choices that most people can relate to--love, marriage, divorce, careers and child-rearing. Our Philosophy The majority of our authors are new writers, with fresh new visions of new worlds. Publishing unknown authors is the riskiest business model, but we want these imaginative new authors to have an outlet, an audience where their voices can be heard. That audience is you! Who We Are Winifred Halsey, Publisher / Editor-in-Chief: I’ve loved science fiction since I was twelve years old and read Childhood’s End by Arthur C. Clarke. My first SF Con was Worldcon in 1976.I also enjoy reading and writing speculative fiction. My
professional background includes a Master’s degree in biology, focusing
on microbiology and molecular biology. I’ve held a variety of research
positions in both pharmaceutical companies and major universities. For
the past eleven years I’ve run my own business, Winifred Halsey & Associates,
To Kill an Eidolon -- one of the first two books we are offering -- is one I’ve written. It plays off my interest and training in microbiology and the disease process. Susan Sizemore, Co-editor / Editorial Consultant I'm a writer. That’s my professional background. I write for several major publishing houses, including Avon and Ace Science Fiction. I am first and foremost a storyteller, and I have no background in the business world. I do know a good story when I read it, which I suppose is my one qualification as an editor. I’m fortunate in knowing many other wonderful storytellers with bright, wonderful ideas. I don’t believe that the publishing world is shrinking, but it is becoming far more focused and less easy to break into. Publishing is changing, yes, and Speculation Press is part of that change. I enjoy being part of changes in the technology of producing, distributing and selling of books that I think will benefit storytellers in the long term. I’m looking forward to contributing my own work to Speculation Press, as well as finding the work of other original authors that Speculation Press can present to the public. As for the publicity manager part of my title, that means it’s my job to talk up the wonderfulness of Speculation Press' books every chance I get. To help create the buzz these books deserve. In order to fulfill my post as Publicity Manager, let me just say that you will find Gates of Hell by Susan Sizemore to be a fast-paced, hard-edged and sexy science fiction novel that is absolutely impossible to put down! Hey, it’s my job… And the truth. Susan Sizemore is the author of over a dozen books in romance and science fiction. Visit her web site (http://members.aol.com/ssizemore/storm/home.htm) to learn more about her -- and maybe buy one of her recently published books through Amazon.com. Andrea Dubnick, Assistant Editor: As a child, I loved the traditional fairy tales and stories based on mythology -- any culture, any mythology. Later I discovered E. R. Burroughs, A. C. Doyle, J. R. R. Tolkien, and Shirley Jackson. As the daughter of a writer/editor and a lithographer, niece of a writer, and granddaughter of a printing salesman, I was surprised when I went to school and learned that basic proofreading symbols were not part of every kid’s alphabet! After
getting my B.A. in English Literature, and putting in 20 years of support
staff work in academia and the public sector, I have turned to writing
fantasy and dark fantasy. In addition to the work I’m doing with Speculation
Press, I co-produce a line of chapbooks that have grown out of the weekly
live genre-fiction readings series called Twilight Tales.Visit

Terry Tindill, Graphic Artist / Layout / Current Web Manager: My passion for science fiction began at age 15 when I first read Andre Norton’s Daybreak- 2250 A.D. I have been an avid reader of science fiction and fantasy ever since . Professionally, I have Bachelor Degrees in Psychology and Sociology and for 21 years was a Counselor/Case Manager with the Department of Corrections. Feeling the need for a change, I retired from Corrections and began to change my hobby of computer graphics into a second career, beginning the path I am currently walking. Sharon Nelson, Original Webmaster: I've spent most of my working life in and around libraries, bookstores and computer centers and doing writing of one form or another, so being part of an online publishing venture has been a great way to combine my previous experience and interests. When I'm not hunched over the keyboard surfing the Web I'm hunched over the keyboard working on my novel, an historical romance set in the 'Golden Age' of 17th-century Amsterdam. My short story Passing Through won first prize in the 1999 ISFiC annual writer's contest. | Top of Page | |
